On February 9, 1888, James Madison Chittim (1858-1911) married Annie Elizabeth Oberle (1868-1938). Chittim began purchasing property in 1895 and quickly became one of the largest cattle handlers in the southwest. The Dos Chimeneas house is believed to have been built between 1871 and 1918. It is the only surviving historic stone structure that dates back to Chittim’s time on the ranch when it was used by ranch hands and herdsmen. The limestone walls of the house are ten inches thick and the roof features the original metal, cedar posts and beams. The house is named for its two stone chimneys: one for an interior fireplace and the other for outdoor cooking. The land around the house continues to be used for grazing.
